General description
General description
This method, very popular in Scandinavia, is used for mix design and quality control mainly in concrete products plants, where low workable and zero slump concrete is used (for such products as hollow-core slabs, tubes and paving blocks).
The method is used for: mix design simulating selected production processes specimen preparation for strength test (fresh and cured) research of mix related phenomena (workability, curing time, admixtures etc.).

Compaction is achieved by the simultaneous application of a low-static compression and a shearing action, which results in the motion of the centre-line of the test piece, which generates a conical surface of revolution while the ends of the test piece remain approximately perpendicular to the axis of the conical surface.

The machine is equipped with 100 mm diameter mould with stripping accessory and process­es in real time the evolution of sample density versus the number of cycles and plots the compaction curve.

It's possible to upgrade the machine in order to measure the Shear during compaction in kN/ m2. Shear is a measuring parame­ter useful for a deeper selection/ dosage and tuning of no-slump concrete components. For in­stance, a very small change in water and plasticizer can shift no­tably the positioning of max shear value along the compaction curve. Increase of water and plasticizer generally shift the max shear val­ue toward the first gyratory cycles; instead the decrease of water and plasticizer shift the max shear to­ward the end of compaction.

Additional Information

Workability of No-Slump concrete can be understood as behavior of compaction, filling in mould and stripping of fresh concrete after compaction. The behaviors are interdependent. A peculiar feature of the immediately stripped com­pacted No-Slump fresh concrete is its Green Strength.

No-slump concrete consists in earth-moist concrete (EMC) and in high plastic stiff consistency concrete characterized by slump value from 0 to 2 cm or Ve-Be time more than 5 seconds. These types of fresh concrete can be molded by mechanical actions and stripped immediately after the compac­tion process. This feature entails that fresh concrete compacted or extruded products, such pav­ers, building blocks, pipes, man­holes, hollow core slabs and other specific products can be moved immediately after stripping and continuously transported from the production plant without distortion and damage to a storing am­bient. This is a primary necessary condition for industrial production Similarly, slip form road concrete finishers can perform perfect pav­ing for airports and motorways as the fresh layer keeps its shape unchanged. Less moistened fresh concrete can be rolled for road or dam construction. The fresh state of early mixed and compacted concrete is characterized by a spe­cial common cohesive feature: the green strength. It can also be defined as the attitude of compact­ed or extruded fresh concrete to keep the original shape thanks to a visco-elastic behavior until the cement starts to set due to hydra­tion of cement components and to develop the usual strength. Green Strength is a cohesive strength given by the internal friction and relative interlocking between the granular finer particles and by cap­illary attractive forces that form at contact points of finer particles (liquid bridges).

The best performance of the com­pacted fresh concrete in accord­ance with the intended use of product is based on an accurate mix design. The proper selection of the components, like fine and coarse aggregate particle size dis­tribution, the introduction of ad­mixtures like ground blast furnace slag and silica fume, along with the dosage of cement , water and plasticizers, need a mix design sup­ported by a testing system char­acterized by a high sensitivity to be capable to discriminate within small changes in order to transfer to production a tuned composi­tion of the concrete mix. The sys­tem is accomplished by the Inten­sive Compaction Test (IC-Test) that is performed by the Concrete Gyra­tory Compactor as its compaction work is precise and definable.
The compaction of the specimen is achieved by the simultaneous action of a static vertical compression and of a shear action resulting of the rotary motion of the centerline of the test piece, which generates a conical surface of revolution, while the ends of the test piece remain perpendicular to the axis of the conical surface.

Concrete Gyratory Compactors produced by CON­TROLS are fully complying with NT BUILD 427 Scandinavian test Standard that defines the method of intensive compaction specially developed to fresh no-slump con­crete testing.
